Journey
of Faith
A Discipleship Experience
Level 1

This journey is 11 weeks — the first of three levels. We believe that if you commit to the next 11 weeks, your life will be forever impacted. The curriculum was designed with you in mind.

Week One

Introduction to Your Discipleship Journey

Welcome to Journey of Faith • Why Discipleship?

Why Discipleship?

Disciple comes from the Greek word meaning "a pupil" — someone who comes to learn and be taught. We are all apprentices in the life of Christ, and our coaches are pastors and teachers who have themselves been discipled.

"…so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints…" Ephesians 1:11 (The Message)

We have two choices: we can speculate or we can dive in. God has far more in store for those willing to believe it, to be part of this experience. Make the choice to learn and give everything to it.

— ✦ —
The Five Purposes of Your Life
Purpose 1

Planned for God's Pleasure

You were created for God's pleasure — to love Him, worship Him, and bring Him glory. That is discipleship.

Purpose 2

Formed for God's Family

You were formed to belong — to fellowship with other believers. Small groups like this one are where that family grows.

Purpose 3

Created to Be Like Christ

You were created to grow into the likeness of Jesus — called discipleship. This is the work we begin here.

Purpose 4

Shaped for Service

You were shaped to serve Him. You're planned for God's pleasure; that's worship. You're formed for a family; that's fellowship. You're shaped for service; that's ministry.

Purpose 5

Made for a Mission

The fifth reason you were put on this Earth is that you were made for a mission. Paul says in Acts 20:24, "The most important thing is that I complete my mission — to tell people the Good News about God's grace." Through you, others will also be discipled and the gospel will spread.

Week Two

Growing Spiritually

Infancy · Childhood · Adulthood

Jesus Saves Us
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 (NIV)

We are promised as believers in Jesus Christ that we will have eternal life. Jesus saves us from our sin and then we begin our journey of growing spiritually.

We Must Be Born Again

In John 3:3, Nicodemus asked, "Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You must be born again."

When you are born of the Spirit, you begin a new life as a spiritual newborn. Being born of water and Spirit means beginning a new life — and that requires connecting with God.

Stages of Spiritual Growth

Just as there are stages of physical development, there are striking similarities between physical and spiritual development:

Infancy

Newborn in faith. Needs spiritual milk, care, and nurturing. Allow to make mistakes.

Childhood / Adolescence

Growing, testing limits, curious. May be restless, impulsive. Needs structure and discipline.

Adulthood

Seeking God first. Not influenced by what others think. Recognizes God at work even when eyes don't see it.

"As for me, it matters very little how I might be evaluated by you or by any human authority. I don't even trust my own judgment on this point. My conscience is clear, but that doesn't prove I'm right. It is the Lord Himself who will examine me and decide." 1 Corinthians 4:3–4 (NLT)
How to Grow Spiritually
  • Natural babies need natural milk — so do spiritual babies. We must take in the Word of God in order to grow.
  • We must be cautious with spiritual junk food — content that is not based on the encouragement of a growing relationship with God.
  • Scripture teaches that there are strong similarities between the way a child grows physically and the way someone grows spiritually.
  • Be open and transparent with your small group. Our journey with God is ongoing — what do you need to do to go to the next level?
Group Discussion

Growing Spiritually

  1. Tell us a little about how you came to Christ. When was that encounter?
  2. Be honest with yourself. On a scale of infancy, to childhood/adolescence, to adulthood — where do you find yourself on your spiritual journey, and why?
  3. Our journey with God is ongoing. What do you need to do to go up to that next level spiritually?
  4. Is there anything you feel is holding you back from growing in God?
  5. At the end of this discipleship journey, where would you like to see yourself spiritually?
Week Three

Encountering God

Loving God • Worship • The Word

Loving God
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength… Love your neighbor as yourself." Mark 12:30–31 (NIV)

When you love the Lord your God completely and devotedly, it is worship. God loves us and we're transformed by His love — our hearts are enlarged to love others as He loves them. This is the greatest relationship.

How Can We Love God?
1. Gratitude

As He was going into a village, ten men with leprosy met Him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" When He saw them, He said to them, "Go show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked Him — and he was a Samaritan.

2. Praise & Worship

One of the ways we love God is by vocalizing it. "I will praise you, O God, as long as I live; in your name I will lift my hands." You can continually have an attitude of worship. Natural human love is ready to believe the word — it will find out what God says about what it is doing.

3. Obedience
"If you love me, keep my commands." John 14:15 (NIV)

For obedience to be love, we can know what God says and choose to obey and follow His instructions. We must be motivated by love to obey God.

4. The Word of God

The Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

"…faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ." Romans 10:17 (NIV)
  • The Word of God is a defense against Satan's lies — so we can walk in freedom.
  • As born-again believers, we cannot let reading the Bible be a rare part of our life. It must be a central part of our life.
  • The Bible is a book of God's promises — healing, forgiveness, grace, supernatural blessing, financial blessing, and many more. As believers, we use God's Word daily.
Group Discussion

Encountering God

  1. How have you experienced God's love before?
  2. What are some ways you're encountering God now?
  3. Encountering God involves surrender. Is there any part of your life that is not fully surrendered yet?
  4. On a scale of 1–10, 10 being the highest, how would you say you're doing with reading the Bible and why?
  5. What do you think God is asking you to do this week?
Week Four

Effective Prayer

Connecting with God • Seven Steps of Prayer

Connecting with God
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us." 1 John 5:14 (NIV)

God wants us to pray. He wants communication between us and God. We talk to Him, and at times He takes to us. Prayer is two-way communication between us and God. In fact, prayer is so important and there is no formula, but the entire Bible shows us we should do to pray more effectively.

Seven Steps of Prayer
  1. Confession — Begin by Acknowledging Who God Is

When we confess who God is, we enlarge Him in our hearts and in our lives. Get your heart right with the Lord. Glorify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together. Confess any sin, and forgive others.

  2. Ask — We Have Not Because We Ask Not

God is calling us to ask. We need to seek, and we need to persist in prayer. He has access to God, and you can come to God with any request, big or small, believing He hears you and will answer you.

  3. Adoration — Worship Him

"I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth." You can continually have an attitude of worship — God at all times.

  4. Intimacy — Soaking in His Presence

"The one thing I ask of the Lord — the thing I seek most — is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in His Temple." Sometimes we can be in such a hurry in life that it affects us spiritually, so much that we allow distractions and dedicate time to rest in the presence of the Lord.

  5. Intercession — Standing Before God on Behalf of Others

The Holy Spirit intercedes, "stands in the gap," and prays for us. God sees the deepest issues we face. Like the same, we are called to stand in the gap for others by praying for them. Jesus Christ stood in the gap for us by dying on the cross.

  6. Thanksgiving — Thanking God for the Victory

Being thankful to God is the manner we ought to come into His presence. God shows us of God's goodness often releases us to being thankful. Thanksgiving reminds us of God's goodness, that He has moved on our BROKENNESS. By faith, you can begin to thank God for the future blessing and healing before it even happens.

  7. Praise — A Song that Changes the Atmosphere

At midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, and the chains were loosened. Breakthrough praise — sometimes at Faith Assembly the atmosphere shifts when we praise. Believe loud, faith-filled praise fills the Spirit of God into our every situation. When we praise, God responds and victory follows.

Group Discussion

Effective Prayer

  1. What has been your experience with prayer? Did you experience anything new today?
  2. Out of the different steps and types of prayer, which do you think you can grow in?
  3. Step two encourages us to ask God for things. What things (big or small) are you encouraged to ask for?
  4. Step seven is praise. Having a lifestyle of praise releases faith. We must start living with a praise mentality — even though life looks bad right now, my God is NOT done. What situations do you need to start proclaiming that God is NOT done yet?
Week Five

The Power of Community

Made for Community • Chosen to Follow Him

The Impact of Your Relationships
"As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fish for people.' At once they left their nets and followed him." Matthew 4:18–20 (NIV)

Our friends affect the quality and direction of our life. We want to surround ourselves with those who are following Jesus. We also want to be fully devoted to reaching those around them to do the same. Immediate pleasure regardless of what it will become is for momentary satisfaction. We live for eternal fulfillment.

We Need People Who Help Us Follow Jesus

Two men were following John the Baptist, and when John pointed Jesus out, they chose to follow Jesus instead. John 1:35–37 — good friends will point you toward Jesus. We also find in Acts 2:42 that the disciples were together continually — building friendships, discussing their faith, and encouraging one another.

How Do We Know If Someone Is Leading Us Away?
"Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)

Some questions to ask yourself when you are with them:

  • How do you feel when you are with them?
  • What do you talk about when you are with them?
  • Away: Gossipy things you know you shouldn't say
  • Away: Discouraged
  • Away: Things that don't align with God's Word
  • Toward: Things that align with God's Word, hope, and hopeful
The Devil Loves to Isolate Believers
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)

The devil hunts three types of animals: the young, the sick, and the old. All three have the same thing in common — they are ISOLATED. If the enemy can't get you stuck in sin, he will isolate you because he knows people will be protected from themselves in a community setting.

Whether you are an introvert or extrovert, every person needs to belong to a community. Practical ways to connect:

  • Connect Group — join a small group and build healthy friendships
  • Join a Connect Group at church on Sunday
  • Attend every Sunday and start praying about where you can serve
Group Discussion

Made for Community

  1. Since you are following Jesus, are your friends headed in the same or opposite direction?
  2. Do you have to pretend to be less committed to Christ when you are around them?
  3. Are you tempted to compromise around them? Are you tempted to do things you would never consider doing when you're not with them?
  4. Do you have to tell yourself, "It's okay to go with them, but I shouldn't do what they do"?
  5. Have you committed to getting involved in a Connect Group?
Week Six

Two Baptisms: Water & Fire

A Declaration of Faith • The Holy Spirit

1. Water Baptism
"Titus 1:5 (NLT) — In just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." Acts 1:5 (NLT)
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

What is water baptism? It's the public declaration of an inward transformation that God has done in your life. Baptism is a symbol: you go under the water left behind (burial/resurrection) — and we follow His example. Scripture teaches us that it is important to be baptized.

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him." Matthew 3:16 (NIV)
— ✦ —
2. The Holy Spirit — Who Is He and What Does He Do?

The Holy Spirit is not a thing or an "it." He is an equal part of the Trinity — God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit: 3 in 1. He knows exactly what we need.

The Holy Spirit Is Our Comforter
"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate — Counselor, Strengthener, Standby — the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf. He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you." John 14:26 (AMP)
The Holy Spirit Is Our Advocate
"I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being." Ephesians 3:16 (NIV)
  • The Holy Spirit is our advocate in overcoming temptation.
  • The Holy Spirit comforts us through difficulty and pain.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit — Speaking in Tongues

John answered their questions by saying, "I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire." Being filled with the Holy Spirit will give you the ability to speak in tongues — a special prayer language. On the day of Pentecost, the disciples were all together when suddenly they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other tongues.

If you want to receive the Holy Spirit, here are 3 prayers you can pray:

  • Holy Spirit... Show me.
  • Holy Spirit... Fill me.
  • Holy Spirit... Use me.
Group Discussion

Two Baptisms: Water and Fire

  1. Have you been baptized in water yet?
  2. Prior to today, what were your beliefs about the Holy Spirit?
  3. Have you been baptized in the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues? If you haven't, would you like to be?
Week Seven

Overcoming Temptation

Keys to Victory • Walking in Truth and Freedom

1. The Key to Overcoming: Walking in the Spirit
"So I say, walk in the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh." Galatians 5:16–17 (NIV)

The flesh is weak. Then you'll be doing what your sinful nature craves. The spirit and the sinful nature are the opposite of each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. The more time we spend with God, the stronger our spirit becomes. The less time we spend with God, the stronger the flesh becomes.

2. We Are a Spirit. We Have a Soul. We Live in This Body.

We are not only tempted by our fleshly desires. We are also tempted by Satan. Satan tempts Jesus in three main areas of life where we are also tempted:

  • The LUST of the FLESH (physical)
  • The LUST of the EYE (soul, mind, will, and emotions)
  • The PRIDE of LIFE (spiritual)

We cannot allow our flesh to rule us. The devil took Jesus to the highest point of the Temple and said, "If you are the Son of God, jump off!" But the Scriptures say, "People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."

3. How to Develop a Strong Spirit and a Renewed Mind
  • Our spirit is controlled by God, and is not perfect.
  • We need to watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
  • A Spirit-filled believer has the power to overcome temptation and to be free.
4. You Will Not Be Overcome with Temptations
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." Read Galatians 6:8
5. We Overcome Temptation by Knowing Who He Is

Receiving the revelation of who God truly is gives us the confidence that we don't have to be tempted. God provides for every spiritual, emotional, and physical need we have. Some names of God:

  • El Shaddai — Almighty God
  • Elohim — Creator
  • Jehovah — The Lord / The GREAT I AM. I AM THAT I AM.
6. We Overcome Temptation by Hearing His Voice
"So then faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
  • We hear the voice of God through His Word and by His Spirit. When God's voice is consistent in our life it will keep us on the right path.
  • We understand God primarily speaks through His Word, and God is EVERYTHING the Word says He is.
  • Hear God's voice and then do what He says. OBEDIENCE to God's Word will empower you to OVERCOME any temptation.
Group Discussion

Overcoming Temptation

  1. Where do you feel the most temptation in your life?
  2. Do you feel like your flesh is stronger or your spirit is stronger right now?
  3. It is not God's desire for us to be subject to our temptation but to OVERCOME temptation. What changes do you need to make starting today to make sure you are living your life as an overcomer of temptation?
Week Eight

Purity

A Life of Purity • Forgiveness and Freedom

1. Your Body
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NLT)

Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. When we surrender our lives to Christ, He becomes a new life. We must honor God and not just "not sin" — we must take care of ourselves as we are told to take care of everything that belongs to God.

2. How to Overcome Temptation

We must strive for purity in every area, especially sexual sin. Sexual sin covers:

  • Lust — any person or thing regarded with sexual desire, self-gratification
  • Fornication — Sexual intercourse between unmarried people
  • Adultery — Marital unfaithfulness in marriage
  • Homosexuality — Sexual desire, attraction, or behavior directed toward a person of one's own sex
  • Pornography — Any form of sexually explicit media

Take authority over the sexual thoughts of the mind. This is the area the enemy will try to aim and target the most. You will have to renew your mind to the Word of God and allow God's thoughts to take captivity to the obedience of Christ.

3. God Forgives Our Past and Sets Us Free
"I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." Psalm 103:12 (NLT)

JESUS IS CLEAR: If you are not married, then you are to not be having sexual intercourse. 2 Corinthians 5:17 — when we surrender our lives to Christ, we step into a new life. We may argue that we do not have God's blessing because we do not obey. God-fearing men and women will correct you in love and in truth.

"You were slaves of sin, but now you are free from sin and have become slaves to righteous living." Romans 6:17–18
4. God Has Set Us Free
"Meditate on God's word in it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do." Joshua 1:8 (NLT)

When we have God's word in us and obey it, our spirit remains strong against the flesh. "When I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." God gives us His grace for our future, and gives us the strength now to be tempted.

Group Discussion

Purity

  1. This week's lesson listed sexual sins — how can we overcome sexual sin on a day-to-day basis?
  2. When moving forward into becoming the person God designed you to be, God forgives your past, but we must make the change from entertaining things we used to run to. What people or things do you need to start running from?
  3. Is there anything you want to share with the group confidentially so it's no longer a secret?
Week Nine

Freedom & Forgiveness

God's Forgiveness • My Choice

1. Why Is Forgiveness So Important?

Every person we know and love has the potential to hurt us. We have shown them how to hurt us — even people who are close to us may hurt us by their words, behavior, or lack of consideration for our feelings. The Bible is full of stories of people who chose to forgive and people who did not.

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Ephesians 4:31–32 (NLT)
2. Why Are We Afraid to Forgive?

True forgiveness is self-sacrifice, where we let go of something offensive to us at no cost to the other person. The act of forgiveness is a seed of healing, and once we sow that seed, we reap God's blessings. Regardless of our own opinions, there must be willful obedience to do God's will — we MUST forgive in order to be forgiven.

3. What Happens When We Don't Forgive?

Holding onto unforgiveness is like drinking poison hoping the other person dies. Unforgiveness turns us into a bitter seed. If we do not forgive, the same pain that happened to us, we start to inflict it on others. Jesus says in Luke 17:1: "Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven — as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little."

Unfortunately, some choose to review their offenders for years, even decades. We must make the decision, although difficult, to forgive.

4. When You Choose Forgiveness, You Choose Freedom
"If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins." Matthew 6:14–15 (NLT)

We have the choice to love or hate, and forgiveness means to speak. We CHOOSE to forgive and lay it all down — and once we sow that seed, we reap an abundance of blessings. We CHOOSE to forgive and lay it all down because God CHOSE to forgive us when Jesus Christ laid his life down to die on the cross.

5. Lay It All Down Today!
  • Recognize the people in your life now, and from your past, whom you have not forgiven.
  • Repent for the specific areas of unforgiveness in your life.
  • Release and forgive the offenders in your life. This doesn't necessarily mean you contact them, but it does mean you release them in your heart for the pain they have caused.
  • We CHOOSE to forgive and lay it all down because God CHOSE to forgive us when Jesus Christ laid His life down to die on the cross.
"But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." Luke 6:27–28 (NIV)
Group Discussion

Freedom & Forgiveness

  1. Unforgiveness is like carrying around a weight that never gets taken off of you. Do you feel like you're carrying a weight around? If so, who is the person you need to forgive?
  2. Have any offenses taken root in your life?
  3. What do you feel God is asking you to do this week?
Week Ten

Serving Others

Serving in Our Example • Members of the Body

Jesus Is Our Example
"So now you are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family. Together, we are His house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself. We are carefully joined together in Him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord." Ephesians 2:19–22 (NLT)

Jesus came to serve. His nature was not to demand or force others to serve Him. His example — when we see Jesus' example, we follow the Lord's example. When we serve, we are to be reminded of the servant's heart.

The Greatest Is the Servant
"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45 (NLT)

The leadership culture of this world is to selfishly invest a lot of personal effort into taking a title or position. The leadership culture of Jesus is to serve "nothing" over others, while the leadership culture of Jesus is to serve selflessly without expecting to gain something in return.

"Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them. Jesus told them, 'In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called friends of the people. But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.'" Luke 22:24–27 (NLT)
The Church Is One Body with Many Parts
"Each part of the body is dependent upon each other to be complete." 1 Corinthians 12:14–21 (NLT)

The body has many different parts, not just one part. "If the foot says, 'I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,' that does not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?" All parts of the body are equally important. Consequently, the parts that seem weaker and least important are actually the most necessary.

Every Person Has a Part in the Body of Christ

Some parts of the body are very visible, while some are under the skin and are not seen in the public eye yet are equally important. There are those who have various roles within the church, whether they interact with each other directly or not. We are on a team — have a part to play.

"He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love." Ephesians 4:16 (NLT)

DO YOUR PART AND GOD WILL DO HIS.
